Concord/Carlisle Girls Travel Basketball Program (Winter 2014/2015)
This information is for players who played in the Concord/Carlisle travel basketball program last season and for anyone else interested in playing in 2014-15. The girls travel program has one team for each grade 4-8. This year we intend to play in the MetroWest Travel League (Sunday league) along with occasional Saturday games. Additionally, teams will play in one or two tournaments and the MetroWest playoffs.
It is expected that one team per grade level will be formed for grades 4 through 8. Travel basketball is for players who demonstrate strong basketball skills and aptitude and can dedicate the time to consistently make practices and games over a schedule that runs mid-November through mid-March. All teams will play approximately 15 regular seasons games plus playoffs and one or two tournaments.
Roster: ??? players
Practice: ?? times per week
Games: ?? games per week (all games are on the weekend, a majority of games will be on Sunday)
Player Time Commitment
As a guideline, if a player will miss more than 10% of the games, and consistently will miss practice due to vacations and other scheduled events, then the Town recreation program may be a better option. Travel players are expected to view basketball as their primary winter sport.
Coach Maureen Sullivan, CCHS Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach, will be offering a pre-season basketball clinic for girls in grades 4-8. The clinic will be held at CCHS on Thursday nights from September 25 – October 23. The clinic for 4th, 5th and 6th grade from 6:00 – 7:15. The clinic for 7th and 8th grade from 7:15 – 8:30.Cost: $125. You will find the clinic information and registration form in the Concord Recreation Program book. You can register by mail, or call the Concord Recreation department at 978-369-6460.
We strongly encourage participation in this clinic for all players interested in the Travel program as well as the Town recreation program. We emphasize that participation is not mandatory but it is a great opportunity for players to work on their skills in preparation for the travel program try-outs and the season.
The girls travel tryouts will take place Friday September 26, 2014 at Nashoba Brooks and Sunday September 28th at Fenn School. Team coaches will make final decisions on player selection with feedback from the Girls Travel Program Director and other grade level coaches. Please Register by September 20, 2014. It is not expected that all players trying out will make a travel team. Players that do not get selected for a travel team are encouraged to play in the Recreation Department Winter Basketball program. E-mail notification of team selection will be made within one week of final tryout.
Game Playing Time Expectations
4th and 5th grade coaches will do their best to balance playing time over the course of the season. It is not expected that 6th, 7th and 8th grade players will play equal minutes. Playing time will vary for 6th-8th grades on a game-to-game basis, with ¼ as a minimum number of minutes per game. Playing time will be based on practice performance, effort, game situation, skills, knowledge of plays and attitude. All playing time guidelines assume players have made the commitment to be at practices and games.
The school grade that a player will be in the fall of 2014 determines the team for that player. The program is not based on age, only grade.
Each girl’s team will have a parent head coach selected by the Girls Travel Program Director. The head coach will select assistant coaches with confirmation from the program director.
