What is the Travel Program?

The travel program enters competitive travel teams for boys (grades 5-8) and girls (grades 4-8) in the MetroWest Travel Basketball League.  For 5th grade and 4th grade girls, the teams will be formed with balanced ability on each team.  For 6th-8th grade, teams will be leveled with an A and B team selected.  The teams are for players who can dedicate the time to consistently make practices and games over a schedule that runs mid-November through mid-March.

Rosters:  Approximately 10-11 players

Practice/Clinics:  2 times per week

Games: 1-2 games per weekend

What do we teach and what can you expect?

Our goal is to develop "well-rounded & complete" players regardless of their size or position preference.  The clearest and best explanation of our player expectations and teaching philosophy is outlined in the book "Toughness" by Jay Bilas:

  • Talk on defense: The toughest players talk on defense, and communicate with their teammates.
  • Jump to the ball: When on defense, the tough defenders move as the ball moves. The toughest players move on the flight of the ball, not when it gets to its destination.
  • Don't get screened: Tough players have a sense of urgency not to get screened and to get through screens so that the cutter cannot catch the ball where he wants to. A tough player makes the catch difficult.
  • Get your hands up: A pass discouraged is just as good as a pass denied.
  • Play the ball, see your man: A tough defender plays the ball and sees his man.
  • Get on the floor: The first player to get to the floor is usually the one to come up with any loose ball.
  • Run the floor: Tough players sprint the floor, which drags the defense and opens up things for others. Tough players run hard and get "easy" baskets, even though there is nothing easy about them.
  • Play so hard, your coach has to take you out: Tough players play so hard that their coaches have to take them out to get rest so they can put them back in.
  • Get to your teammate first: Tough players are great teammates.
  • Take responsibility for your teammates: Tough players take responsibility for others in addition to themselves. They give credit to their teammates before taking it themselves.
  • Take a charge: Tough players are down in a stance on both ends of the floor, with feet staggered and ready to move. Tough players are the aggressor, and the aggressor is in a stance.
  • Finish plays: Tough players don't just get fouled, they get fouled and complete the play.
  • Work on your pass: A tough player gets down, pivots, pass-fakes, and works to get the proper angle to pass away from the defense and deliver the ball.
  • Throw yourself into your team's defense: A tough player values his performance first by how well he defended.
  • Take and give criticism the right way: Tough players can take criticism without feeling the need to answer back or give excuses. They are open to getting better and expect to be challenged and hear tough things.
  • Show strength in your body language: Tough players project confidence and security with their body language. They do not hang their heads, do not react negatively to a mistake of a teammate, and do not whine and complain to officials.
  • Catch and face: Tough players catch, face the defense, and make the right read and play, and they do it with poise.
  • Concentrate, and encourage your teammates to concentrate: Concentration is a skill, and tough players work hard to concentrate on every play. Tough players go as hard as they can for as long as they can.
  • It's not your shot; it's our shot: Tough players work for good shots and understand that it is not "my" shot, it is "our" shot. Tough players celebrate when "we" score.
  • Box out and go to the glass every time: Tough players are disciplined enough to lay a body on someone. They make first contact and go after the ball.
  • Take responsibility for your actions: Tough players make no excuses. They take responsibility for their actions.
  • Look your coaches and teammates in the eye: Tough players never drop their heads.  They always look coaches and teammates in the eye, because if they are talking, it is important to them and to you.
  • Move on to the next play: Tough players don't waste time celebrating a good play or lamenting a bad one.
  • Make getting better every day your goal

What is the commitment?

As a guideline, if a player will miss more than 10% of the games, and consistently will miss practice due to vacations and other scheduled events, then the Town Recreation Program may be a better option.  Players are expected to view basketball as their primary winter sport.

Practice Schedule

Your team will have practice two (2) times per week and will participate in a ten (10) week skills development clinic conducted by the professionals from Pivotal Hoops.  The clinics will replace any scheduled practice so that your commitment remains two (2) nights per weekday and two (2) games per weekend.

In addition to our program, we strongly encourage participation in the clinics offered by the CCHS Varsity coaches.  We emphasize that participation is not mandatory but it is a great opportunity for all players to work on their skills in preparation for the winter basketball season.

CCHS Fall Clinics

Like last year, Coach Cohen (CCHS Boy’s Varsity Coach) and Coach Sullivan (CCHS Girl’s Varsity Coach) will offer Fall clinics.  Coach Cohen’s boys clinic will be on Monday nights and Coach Sullivan’s girl’s clinic will be on Thursday nights.  You will find the clinic information and registration form in the Recreation Program book that will be sent to all Concord and Carlisle residents in the next couple of weeks.  Once you receive it, you can register by mailing in the registration form with payment or call the recreation department at 978-369-6460.

Are there Tryouts?

Travel tryout will take place during the last week of September.  You are encouraged to attend both tryouts for your age group but must attend at least one of the tryouts.  There will be independent coaches and parent coaches evaluating the players.  Online registration for tryouts is required.  To register and view the tryout schedule go to the Concord Carlisle Youth Basketball (www.ccybasketball.org) home page.

What team do I tryout for?

The school grade that a player will be in the Fall of 2014 determines the team.  The program is not based on age, grade only.

Who are the Coaches?

The teams will have a head coach and up to two assistant coaches/managers.  The travel directors will assign the team head coaches.  The head coach will select his/her assistants with confirmation for the travel director.

What is the Cost?

$325 (5th-8th) and $275 (4th girls) includes gym time, referees, league fee, pre-season tournament fee, in-season clinics and uniform (personalized shooting shirt, jersey, shorts).

** Please note, the cost for the team is for the regular season (November – March) and DOES NOT include the CCHS Fall clinics and equipment.


Uniforms, shooting shirts and basketballs are included in the registration cost.  Basketball shoes and mouth guard (highly recommended) are NOT included in the program cost.
