What is the CCYB Travel Program?

The Concord Carlisle Youth Basketball Travel Program enters competitive travel teams for boys and girls in grades 4 through 8 in the MetroWest Travel Basketball League

Commitment:

The CC Youth Basketball Travel Program is a competitive program.  Due to the limited number of players on each team, the CCYB expects that parents and players will make basketball the player’s number one sport during the season.  For players who want to play in a program with less commitment, Concord Recreation offers a recreational in-town basketball program.  Practices for the season begin the first week of November, and playoffs extend into the first two weeks in March, with a break between Christmas and New Years.  Players in grades 5-8 are expected to commit to two 75-90 minute practices per week and up to two games on weekends.  Players in grade 4 will have two 60-minute practices each week and one game on Sundays, and we are recommending that 4th graders also sign up for the town recreation program that has their games on Saturdays in town.

Tryouts:

  • Tryouts for the CC Youth Basketball Travel Program will be held in October.  Online registration for tryouts is required.  It is expected that if you are selected for a team that you will accept the position on that team.
    • Girls tryouts will be held on Sunday 30 Sep and Wednesday 03 Oct at CCHS.  The timing of the tryouts has been coordinated in conjunction with the Patriot Hoops Clinics (no clinic on Wed 03 Oct).
      • 4th-5th grade girls: 12:00pm-1:30pm Sun 30 Sep and 7:00pm-8:00pm Wed 03 Oct
      • 6th-8th grade girls: 1:30pm-3:00pm Sun 30 Sep and 8:00pm-9:00pm Wed 03 Oct
    • Boys tryouts will be held on Wednesday, October 10, Thursday, October 11, and Saturday, October 13 and will be managed by professional evaluators and coaches.  The timing of the tryouts has been coordinated in conjunction with the Patriot Hoops Clinics to allow for the boys who didn't play over the summer to get reacclimated with basketball.  While not required, we highly recommend the boys attend as many of these sessions as they can.  Note that days and times are subject to change, so please pay attention to e-mail updates.
      • 4th Grade Boys: 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 @ CCHS Maroon gym.  No Saturday session is required.
      • 5th Grade Boys: 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 at CCHS and 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 at CCHS
      • 6th Grade Boys: 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 at CCHS and 10:45 - 12:15 on Saturday, October 13 at CCHS
      • 7th Grade Boys: 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11  at Nashoba Brooks School and 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13 at CCHS
      • 8th Grade Boys: 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 at Nashoba Brooks School and 2:15 - 3:45 on Saturday, October 13 at CCHS
  • The school grade that a player will be in the fall of 2018 determines the team.  The Program is not based on age, grade only.  It is possible for players to "play up" one grade level, but that will be determined at the discreation of the coaches.
  • In order to obtain a fair evaluation, the expectation of the Program is that each player attend tryouts for two sessions.  However, in cases where players cannot attend two sessions, each player must attend at least one tryout session and notify the Boys or Girls Travel Director.
  • In cases where a player cannot try out because of a documented injury, prior notification must be sent to the Boys or Girls Director (see below for contact information).  In addition, the player must be registered for tryouts. We will use our sole discretion in placing that player on a team.

Selection Process and Team Structure:

  • The number of teams per grade is not determined until after tryouts, and will depend upon the number of players who try out and are selected to a team.  Please note that we will attempt to have two teams per grade (except 4th grade, which has one).
  • The Selection process for the various grades and teams will begin as soon as all tryouts have been completed, and will be based on prior year coaches evaluations, the scores of the independent evaluators, input from this season's coaches, and the position needs of each team.  Attributes such as coachability, attitude, and hustle are considered as well as pure basketball skills.
  • Teams are typically formed with two skill levels that play in two different divisions in Metrowest and are designated as Maroon, Gold, and in cases of a third team, White.  In certain age groups, we may have two teams that play in the same division.  CCYB endeavors to place our teams in Metrowest divisions that will be competitive and offer a balance of winning and losing.  We balance this division placement with non-league games against teams that may be placed in a higher or lower division.
  • Player placement is not black and white.  We must consider both the needs of the team and what we believe to be best for the child.
  • You will be notified via e-mail as soon as the selection process is finalized.  As indicated above, it is expected you will accept a spot on a team if you are selected.

Coach Selection:

We will identify and select the coaching candidates.  Coach selections are based on the candidate's coaching and basketball background, including prior experience in the CCYB Travel Program as well as other youth related leadership activities.

Playing Time:

The CCYB travel program is a competitive program, and equal playing time is not guaranteed and should not be expected.

Playing time is at the coach’s discretion. There is no set rule, nor set amount of playing time per game, as many factors affect the amount of playing time in any given week, tournament, and/or game.  The following factors will be considered relative to playing time: 1) skill level and applied basketball knowledge, 2) attendance at practices, 3) attitude, 4) work ethic and hustle, 5) situations, 6) matchups, 7) foul trouble, 8) fatigue, and 9) injury.  Coaches will manage the playing time of each player based on the aforementioned factors.  Parents should set this expectation and review these guidelines with their player(s).

Program Fees:

The travel program charges fees of $300-$350 for grades 5-8 and $250-$275 for grade 4, which includes the cost of gym time, referees, league fees, and pre-season tournament fees.  The precise fees will be determined by September 1, 2018.  If a new uniform is needed, there is an additional cost of $125 (jersey $75, shorts $25, personalized shooting shirt $25).

Optional clinics with professional coaches will be offered during the season for players who want to work on specific skills.

** Please note, the cost for the team is for the regular season (November–March) and DOES NOT include the CCHS fall clinics.

**If you are in need of financial assistance, please contact the boys or girls Director at the bottom of the page.

Uniforms and Equipment:

Jersey numbers are assigned by CCYB and remain the same for the duration of the player's involvement in the program.  They MUST NOT be changed without coordinating with CCYB administration.  We maintain a unique set of uniform numbers for each grade level, so we need to ensure there is no overlap if participants try to get a uniform from an older sibling or friend.  This can cause major issues with Metrowest and can be grounds for penalties for us.  Your child's assigned jersey number can be found on their profile on the CCYB website.  Uniforms will be purchased directly through Brine's Sporting Goods' online ordering system.

Basketballs are provided by the program for each team.  Each player is expected to have a uniform and  shoes and mouth guard (highly recommended) are NOT included in the program cost.

If you will be purchasing your own basketballs, please note the proper basketball size:

Boys grades 4th, 5th & 6th and girls all grades:         standard women’s ball 28.5 inch

Boys grades 7th & 8th                                            standard men’s ball 29.5 inch

CCHS Fall Clinics:
